Keonjhar, Mar 23:
After a brief hiatus, farmer suicide made a comeback in Odisha with three deaths reported in last three days. The latest incident came from drought hit Keonjhar district today.
The deceased has been identified as Purusottam Dehuri of Janardanpur village under Sadar block of Keonjhar.
He consumed pesticide in a bid to kill self and breathed his last while under treatment at Keonjhar district hospital this morning.
The family members of the deceased said that he was under stress because of his inability to pay back the loans.
“My son was under stress because of the drought here. His tomato crop had failed and he had to pay back the loans he had taken from the Cooperative Society and Bank of India. He asked me to help him financially, but I was not in a position to support him either. He committed suicide because of the stress,” said his father Suna Dehuri.
It may be mentioned here that while a farmer from Bolangir hanged himself because of crop loss and loan burden yesterday, another from Dhenkanal district committed suicide the day before for the same reason.
