Niali/Cuttack), July 29:
Tension ran high at Niali block in Odisha’s Cuttack district following a farmer’s suicide today. The farmer reportedly ended his life because he was unable to repay his farm loans.
After the news of the farmer’s suicide spread, ngry villagers staged a road blockade by burning tyres on the Niali-Cuttack road.
Niali police rushed to the spot and pacified the villagers. The road blockade was withdrawn after the local sarpanch handed over Rs 2000 to the family of the deceased under the Harischandra Yojana.
According to reports, Dibakara Ojha, a farmer of Palasudha village of Eranch panchayat under Niali block had incurred loans over one lakh rupees from the local cooperative society, nationalised banks and local money lenders towards sugarcane cultivation in his five acres of land.
However, he sustained heavy losses after the crop got very badly damaged due to the intense heatwave during summer.
“Since then, my husband was mentally upset as he had no other means of repaying the loans”, said the wife of the deceased farmer in her complaint with the Niali police.
