Keonjhar, Dec 14:

In an unfortunate incident, a woman died at Keonjhar district headquarters hospital (DHH) today allegedly due to transfusion of blood of different group into her body.

The deceased was identified as Sukanti Nayak (50) of Puruna Bazar in Keonjhar town. Family members of Nayak have lodged an FIR against CDMO and ADMO at Keonjhar Town police station.

According to reports, Nayak was admitted to the hospital yesterday afternoon due to kidney ailments. Doctors decided to administer her blood following which the family members of Nayak arranged it from blood bank.

However, they alleged that the woman was administered A+ blood while her blood group was O+. The doctors and nurses didn’t examine the blood provided by the blood bank, they said.

“Sukanti started to shiver after the blood was administered to her. We immediately called the nurse. She detached the blood unit from her and went away. We couldn’t find the nurse after that,” said Sri Charan Nayak, brother of the deceased.

Accepting administration of blood of wrong group, Keonjhar CDMO Kabindra Prasad Sahoo said, “The concerned nurse should have checked the blood before administering it to the patient but she didn’t do it. This is definitely a mistake on our part. I have ordered for a probe into the incident. Action will be taken against anyone found guilty after the investigation.”

Informing about the confusion in blood administration, the official said, “While Sukanti Nayak was undergoing treatment in medicine ward of the hospital, another woman namely Sukanti Nayak was admitted to Gynaecology ward. Both the patients required blood. The blood which was meant to be administered to the woman admitted in Gynaecology ward was given to Sukanti of medicine ward.”
