Bhubaneswar, Dec 12:
A 32 year old woman who attempted self immolation in front of Naveen Niwas, chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence, on Wednesday afternoon after all her attempts to put alleged killers of her brother behind bars proved futile, was arrested and forwarded to judicial custody.
She was prevented from taking the extreme step by security personnel on duty at the chief minister’s residence.
Reports said, the woman Rina Pradhan, accompanied by 17 people including relatives came to Naveen Niwas to meet with the chief minister on Wednesday to demand arrest of her brother’s killers. But when they were stopped by security personnel, Rina poured kerosene on herself. The policemen on duty, however, overpowered her and took her into custody.
Rina Pradhan (32), a mother of two children and resident of Bolagarh said she has been demanding the arrest of the culprits who had allegedly killed her brother Ramakanta Paltasingh on September 14. She said her brother had developed enmity with some people in the village as he was opposed their criminal activities.
“On that fateful night four people came to our home and forcibly took away my brother Ramakant. Next morning his mutilated body was found near the railway tracks in Jatani,” she said.
Rina along with some villagers had staged a rail roko and halted several trains for hours at the Khurda Road station on October 8 to protest police inaction over the murder case. The police had then assured them of immediate action and arrest of the accused persons named in the FIR, said people from Rina’s village.
Rina said she had done everything to get justice for her brother and even written to the chief minister and the DGP requesting action against the culprits and protection for her family.
“When all efforts failed I had come here to end my life,” said a distraught Rina Pradhan.
While Rina was arrested for her suicide attempt, 17 villagers who had come with her were arrested for violating prohibitory orders and aiding the immolation bid, IIC of Airfield police station Rashmi Ranjan Sahoo said.
