An elderly woman was today arrested for allegedly branding a newborn boy who died late last night at a government-run hospital in Odisha’s Rourkela.
The woman identified as Shanti Das (65) was arrested by Raghunathpalli police for allegedly branding the month-old baby with hot iron bangles leading to his death at Ispat General Hospital (IGH) yesterday.
The woman, a midwife by profession, was sent to judicial custody following her arrest.
“We have filed a case suo motu as no one came forward to lodge complaint against the woman. The accused woman has been sent to jail,” Raghunathpalli IIC, Ramesh Chandra Dora said.
The month old baby of Chhian Barla from Lohar slum at Deogaon in Sundargarh district was admitted to Ispat Government Hospital (IGH) in a critical condition yesterday. However, he succumbed hour after he was admitted to the hospital.
The infant was branded at 10 places in the abdomen to help gain weight. However, his condition deteriorated on the very day the infant was branded.
The relatives of Barla had advised him to brand the child to increase his body weight.
