Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police finally arrested a youth accused in abducting a woman from Raj Mahal square in Odisha capital.
The accused was identified as Manas Behera. He was detained by Capital police after handing over the woman to her family the day before yesterday.
The woman was rescued six days after abduction in the city. Police have recorded her statement that revealed that she was kidnapped and molested in a room by Manas.
Her statement was also recorded in the court under section 164 of CrPC yesterday. According to her statement, she knew Manas since past four years. He had called her on June 28 for meeting at Raj Mahal square. After she reached the venue, Manas started blackmailing her to end his life if she does not marry him. She was forced to go with him to a room where she was confined. The accused started torturing her both physically and mentally. Even, he broke her smartphone. However, she managed to contact her cousin and informed him about the incident following which police rescued her after six days.
She alleged that the accused had pressurised her to have physical relation with him and for marriage. Police arrested him yesterday and forwarded him to court.
The 24-year-old woman of Kupari area under Khaira police limit of Balasore district was allegedly abducted by spurned lover Manas (30), son of Ramakant Behera of Gadapokhari village in the district from Raj Mahal square on June 28 evening in Odisha capital.
Police rescued her on Tuesday night and handed over to her parents.
According to reports, the woman was staying at her uncle’s house at Chintamaniswar area and working at a private company in Chandrasekharpur area in Bhubaneswar. Manas had allegedly been harassing her several times on roads. Even, he had threatened to commit suicide if the woman does not agree to marry him. After her parents rejected Manas’ proposal, he had threatened to kidnap her from road.
He allegedly abducted the woman from Raj Mahal square on June 28 evening and kept her in an unknown place. The victim’s father had lodged a complaint with Laxmisagar police against Manas alleging him of kidnapping his daughter. However, the police took no further action after filing a missing report. After the victim’s father contacted DCP Satyabrat Bhoi in this regard, the case was transferred to Capital police station under which the incident had occurred.
Media had raised eyebrows over police inaction in the case in the past five days. However, the victim was rescued on Tuesday night following raids at several locations in Bhubaneswar.
