Bhubaneswar, Dec 16:

In an unprecedented move, Speaker Pradip Amat today adjourned the Odisha Assembly for an indefinite period ending the winter session of the assembly, accepting a motion moved by government chief whip Pravat Tripathy alleging non-cooperation by opposition members in running the House.

Tripathy also alleged in his motion that the opposition members had also attacked the speaker by damaging his microphone.

The winter session was to run till December 26.

After sitting on a protest dharna under the Gandhi statue in the Assembly premises for a while,  Congress MLAs  marched to Raj Bhawan  to meet with the Governor and convey to him their sense of outrage over the ‘undemocratic and sudden move’ by the BJD government to end the winter session of the assembly halfway .

Reacting sharply to the development, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh said it was most unfortunate and shameful that the government would choose to run away from confronting the truth in such a cowardly manner.

“Clearly the government was scared and did not want to face the five motions including a no confidence motion brought by us for the day,” he said.
