Nandapur (Koraput), Sep 14:

Two months after the 11 people were mauled to death by a rogue wild bear in Kotapad block of Koraput district, another wild bear has wreaked havoc in the district, this time, in Ghatiguda village under Nandapur block, killing three people on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Balaram Gemel (65) of Panua village, Sibadas Khara (55) and Damodar Gemel (35) of Maliput village.

The villagers found the body of Balaram on Friday morning.

In the first incident, the bear attacked Balaram near a nullah. As he shouted for help, five women, who were near the place, ran away and informed the villagers.

The villagers and the family members of Balaram who rushed to the spot found the bear sitting next to his body and attacked it with spears. The injured bear, before disappearing into the forest, attacked Endana Gemel who was rushed to the district headquarters hospital with seriously injuries.

Sibadas and Damodar who had gone to the spot to guard the body of Balaram were suddenly attacked by the bear.

While Damodar was seriously injured, the marauding bear killed Sibadas and dragged his body to a distance of 500 metres after feasting on parts of his body.

Damodar later succumbed to his injuries while he was on the way to a hospital at Vishakhapatnam.

The body of Sibadas was later recovered at about 8 pm.

Following the information of the bear attack, a tranquilizer team led by the DFO have rushed to spot.

“The forest staff are keeping a strict vigil on the movement of the bear”, said AOF Bakhla, Regional Chief Conservator of Forests.

Panic has gripped the area following the incident.
