Baleswar, Jan 18:
A local court in neighbouring West Bengal today remanded four inter-state Odisha dacoits to police custody in connection with a bank robbery under Egra police station limits in East Midnapore district earlier this month.
Contai Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s court allowed the police to take the accused on three day remand. The four accused– Santosh Kumar Das, Sashikanta Mohanty, Sk Azad and Sk Saifulla were arrested in Baleswar on January 16 for involvement in robberies in Baleswar, Mayurbhanj and West Bengal.
The public prosecutor said possession of arms and dacoity charges were levelled against them.
The government counsel submitted to the court that Rs 23.81 lakh in cash, two fire-arms and six mobiles were seized from the four, believed to be part of an inter-state gang during the raid by Odisha police with help by Bengal counterparts, and they needed to be interrogated further.
The four were also suspected to be involved in a bank dacoity case in West Midnapore earlier this month, police said.
It may be recalled that DIG (eastern range) Asheet Panigrahi while briefing media after the arrest of the four had said that Odisha police would also take these inter-state dacoits on remand for further interrogation as there had been a number of bank robbery cases in Baleswar and Mayurbhanj districts mainly from Odisha Gramnya Bank branches.
