Villager flees to escape gallows at Praja court in Odisha

Malkangiri: Even as the Odisha government is strategizing for coordinated counter-offensive measures against Maoists, the rebels continue to unleash terror in Malkangiri district considered as the hotbed of the outlawed group.

A tribal man in the cut-off region of the district is running for life after he escaped from the Praja court (People’s court) which handed him death sentence.

Ramachandra Sisa from Murelguda village of Paplur panchayat under Chitrakonda block in the district has been playing hide and seek with the incoming danger ever since he ran away from the village. Sisa along with his wife has left for an undisclosed location fearing for their lives.

Notably, Sisa was tried in the court last week deep inside a forest for defying their sermon. However, he managed to give the Reds a slip.

With no other option left, he had to abandon his frail mother at home to fend for herself.

On Thursday morning, a group of armed ultras numbering around 20 barged into the village in search of Sisa. After running amok, the members of the Kalimela Dalam headed by CPI (Maoist) leader Ranadev forced into the house, sources said.

The rebels terrorised the villagers and enquired about their convict. When they failed to extract any information, they set Sisa’s two-wheeler afire.
