Vegetable prices skyrocket in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: In the beginning of monsoon, the vegetable prices touched the sky putting additional burden on the households in the state capital.

Usually, the veggies are found most expensive during rainy season till Kartik Purnima. However, the retailers are selling the vegetables in higher prices in the major local markets in Unit 1, Sahid Nagar, Rasulgarh and Chandrasekharpur.

The prices of most of the vegetables were found above Rs 60 per kg.

While the onion price was between Rs 16 and Rs 20 per kg in past four days, now it is sold at Rs 26 per kg in the local markets.

Similarly, potato prices go up to Rs 20 per kg, beans price Rs 120 per kg and the vegetables including brinjal, parbal and long-beans are sold at Rs 60 per kg in the markets.

The prices of tomato, cabbage, drumstick, lady’s finger and spine gourd also increased in the local markets.

The vegetable prices are higher this year in the city as compared to previous years during the rainy season. Despite high prices, we are bound to purchase vegetables for food, said a local in Chandrasekharpur area.

The prices of vegetables are higher in local markets against the malls like Reliance Fresh and other outlets. The retailers are getting advantage of the demand of people for vegetables, said a senior citizen.
