Prisoner dies in Jharpada jail

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Mar 24:

An under trial prisoner (UTP) has died in the Jharpada jail here.

The prisoner Bihari Jena was arrested six months back on charges of allegedly killing a youth in the Bomikhal area of the city.

Jena’s body was taken to the Capital Hospital for post mortem. Jail sources said Jena who was sick felt uncomfortable on Sunday night and died on the way to hospital. His death could have occurred due to heart attack and things would be clear after the post mortem is done, the sources added.

  1. It is the responsibility of jail authorities to ensure safety of inmates many of whom unfortunately get falsely implicated either by corrupt policemen or by influential enemies of the inmates. The mere allegation on somebody against another does not make the latter a criminal and the courts having failed to prove the allegation against Sri Jena within 6 months he should be regarded as totally innocent and the government and the jail authorities should pay adequate amount of compensation to the bereaved family. Meantime the death should be regarded as a murder and the jail authorities should be dealt with accordingly until completion of investigation.
