He was arrested yesterday and produced in court today after a medical examination.

“I have done no wrong with her. I just smiled at her once. An independent inquiry will expose the real culprits,” said Cheru, playing the victim.

The tribal girl, belonging to Tumudipada area under Sadar police station, had lodged a complaint suggesting that Cheru had initiated physical relation with her on the pretext of marriage, which led to her pregnancy. She had been to her relative’s place in Tangapada village around Bilabadi area at the time.

Her family members got her checked in an ASHA home after noticing physical changes in her. However the girl preferred to keep mum over the man involved as we had reported earlier here (http://odishasuntimes.com/113550/saviour-doc-accused-torturing-pregnant-minor-girl-odisha/)

The entire incident came to fore after Ambika Mohapatra, the ASHA doctor treating her, abused her on an occasion. The doctor, who had given the girl shelter after the incident and had promised to adopt her baby, was arrested on January 15 on charges of illegal detention and physical and mental torture of the pregnant woman following this incident.

Unaware of the intricacies of laws on adoption, the family of the girl is negotiating with Cheru’s family to get the girl married to him. Meanwhile, the doctor is cooling her heels in the jail.
