Unrest in Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya

Reported by Santosh Jagdev

Bhubaneswar, Aug-7:

Students of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya here ransacked the main gate of the college and locked the chambers of the principal after their demand to remove a ‘controversial’ guest teacher fell on ‘deaf ears’.

The angry students locked the college gate and threatened to continue their strike.

The striking students said they had requested the principal Dr Tamasharani Das Mohapatra to remove a guest lecturer, Lalatendu Panigrahy of Drama department for his ‘poor performance’ and ‘objectionable behaviour’ but the authorities chose not to respond.

The deputy director of Culture department Prasanta Kumar Rath visited the disturbed campus with a police squad to take the stock of the situation. But the irate students refused to allow them to enter the campus.

The principal Ms Das Mohapatra said the students turned violent hours after they had submitted a memorandum demanding Panigrahi’s removal. She expressed surprise over the ‘sudden move’ by the students even after her promise to look into their grievances.

The students of the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, however, said the explanations offered by the authorities were false and misleading.  .
