Union Steel secy to visit Odisha on Monday

Union Steel secretary Rakesh Singh will arrive in the capital city here tomorrow to review progress of ongoing and proposed projects in Odisha.

Sources said the Steel secretary ,accompanied by other senior officials from the Centre, will discuss the progress of the ongoing and proposed steel projects in the state with the chief secretary and senior officials of the state.

Matters concerning Posco, SAIL and Tata projects are likely to figure at tomorrow’s high level meeting, the sources added.

The meeting holds significance since it is being held after prime minister Narendra Modi had assured the South Korean President Park Geun-hye at Myanmar that the government would offer full support for the establishment of the mega steel plant proposed by Posco in Odisha. Even Modi had told the South Korean President that he would make efforts with the Odisha state government to resolve any outstanding issues.

The meeting will look into the  issues faced by different steel projects in the state and try to arrive at solutions to resolve them.

On the Posco front, the issue of granting prospecting license (PL) in favour of Posco India to mine in the Khandadhar iron ore reserve in Sundargarh district pending with the Centre is likely to come up also likely come up during the meeting is pending allotment of 1,000 acres of land to Posco by the state government.

Similarly, the state government is likely to apprise the Union secretary on the likely commissioning of the Tata Steel project at Kalinganagar in Jajpur district towards June next year.

The plant’s Coke Oven and captive power plant unit are also likely to be commissioned by the end of this month. Necessary clearances for the same may come up in the meeting. Four iron ore mines of the Tatas are operating on ‘express order’ while execution of lease deeds for the same are pending.

Several issues concerning SAIL are likely to come up during the meeting. Two iron ore mines of SAIL Barsuan and Bolani are operating on ‘express order’, execution of lease agreements for the same are pending.
