Bhubaneswar, Sep 29:
The victim identified as Neelam Biswal who hails from Deogarh district was later rescued by her neighbours and rushed to Capital Hospital with severe burn injuries. She was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack in a critical condition.
Neelam was married to Raghukula Tilak Biwal of Unit-3 two years ago but was subjected to regular torture by her mother-in-law Arati Biswal “because her family failed to meet her undue demands for more dowry and cash”, her neighbours said.
Only six months ago Neelam’s parents had coughed up Rs 2 lakh in cash but that did not satisfy her mother-in-law’s greed.
“Four days ago, she had called to say her mother in law had turned more violent and torturing her.I asked her to lodge a complaint with police but she refused to do so for the sake of her father who has suffering from a cardiac problem,” her friend and neighbour Reena Rani Sahu told OST.
“We heard her scream this afternoon and found Neelam in flames. We tried to douse the fire and rushed her to the hospital. She told us her mother-in-law had poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze” Reena added.
The city Mahila police has detained Arati and her husband Raghukula for interrogation after initiating investigation into the matter
