Two more Odisha farmers end lives over crop loss

Two more cases of alleged farmer suicides were added to the never-ending list as distressed farmers died today in Odisha’s Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts. While one framer, who had committed suicide yesterday by consuming poison due to crop loss and loan burden, died today in Kalahandi, another farmer hanged self in Nabarangpur due to crop loss and debt repayment pressure.

Unnable to cope up with the stress, the peasant from Pujipadar village under Narla block in Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district took to the extreme step and attempted suicide yesterday.

The farmer identified as Somnath Majhi was admitted to Narla community health centre (CHC) and was undergoing treatment in a critical condition.

According to reports, Somnath was under severe stress due to bad crops owing to deficient rainfall. Realising that he won’t be able to repay the outstandings, he consumed pesticide late yesterday night.

In the other incident, Dasaru Gauda of Ramasa village under Jharigaon block in Nabarangpur was found hanging from a tree today morning. He has reportedly committed suicide due to crop loss and loan burden.
