Farmer suicides continue unabated in Odisha with two more alleged suicides reported from Nabarangpur district today.
The two farmers who allegedly took the extreme step today by hanging themselves are Baldev Gond and Chaituram Gond.
While Baldev hailed from Nangaguda village under Umerkote block, Chaituram hailed from Mouradehi village under Raighar block of the district.
Both allegedly killed themselves due to crop loss and loan burden. Baldeb’s younger brother has claimed that his brother had not taken any loans from banks but had taken hand loans from fellow villagers. He claimed that his brother was under severe mental pressure to repay loans after his crops failed and had committed suicide.
On the other hand, deceased Chaituram’s family claimed that he had taken loans from the bank and hand loans from individuals as well adding that he had ended his life after remaining under mental stress due to crop loss. Chaituram had grown paddy and millet crops in four acres of land.
