Two killed in cracker unit explosion in Odisha

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Brahmapur, Sep 4:

Two persons were killed after they sustained grievous injuries in explosion while manufacturing crackers at Nalabanta village under Aska Tehsil in Odisha’s Ganjam district today.

The duo was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here for treatment early this morning. However, they succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the referral hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Ashok Pradhan and Pintu Khatua.

Meanwhile, police personnel have reached the spot for investigation and fire tenders have been pressed into service to extinguish the fire.

Nalabanta, on the outskirts of Aska, is known as the Sivakasi of south Odisha for the mushrooming cracker units in the village.

Notably, the villagers eke out a living by preparing firecrackers all through the year. The business takes full swing especially months ahead of the festival of lights—Diwali.

Though there are a handful of licensed cracker manufacturing units, the villagers are mostly engaged in illegal manufacturing of the crackers.

There have been many fatal accidents and several raids on the units in the past but it fails to deter them.
