Two held for killing leopard in Odisha

Two persons were arrested Wednesday on charges of killing a leopard in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

Two persons, identified as 32-year old Panchanana Karjee of Chadeibada and 24-year old Titu Behera of Masanibadi were arrested for allegedly killing a leopard on June 15, S S Mishra, DFO Brahmapur said.

The DFO said the two have confessed to killing  the leopard near Bahghalati irrigation project on the Ganjam- Gajapati border.

Forest officials said the two claimed they had entered the forest zone for shifting cultivation operations when a leopard attacked a goat and  they killed the leopard in order to save the goat.

Forest officials, however,  ruled out the possibility of their involvement with international smugglers.

The skin of the animal, measuring 180 cm long and 54 cm wide, six nails and a country-made gun had been seized by Forest officials on June 18 from an abandoned house in a village under the Patrapur forest range.

They finally zeroed in on the two in the course of their investigation, sources in the department said.
