Two elderly persons killed over sorcery practice in Odisha

Koraput/Ganjam: In two separate gruesome incidents out of superstition, two elderly persons were killed on suspicion of practicing sorcery in Odisha.

The two incidents were reported from tribal district Koraput and Ganjam district.

While one deceased was identified as Ramna Bidika of Rutupai village under Bandhugaon block in Koraput district, another was identified as Dandasi Goud of Ramagiri village under Seragarh police limits in Ganjam.

The first incident took place at neighbouring Lungu village in Garidi panchayat under Bandhugaon block on Sunday. But, it came to fore after the deceased’s wife approached the police on Wednesday.

According to reports, after death of a person in Lungu village identified as Barik Bidika, who was suffering from tuberculosis, on Saturday, the villagers suspected Ramna was behind his death. They alleged him in a village meeting of practicing sorcery.

After Ramna and his wife denied the allegations, the irate villagers beat the couple following which they fainted and fell down. Later, the villagers tied Ramna’s hands and legs with rope and took him to the crematorium where he was set on fire and burnt live. After Ramna’s wife asked about her husband, the villagers did not disclose anything to her.

Later, his wife came to know that her husband was burnt alive. She lodged complaint with Bandhugaon police against 18 persons for killing her husband.

Acting on the basis of the complaint, a police team visited the village where all the male persons fled fearing arrest.

In the similar incident in Ganjam district, Dandasi was killed by the villagers on suspicion of practicing black magic.

The skin of the body was peeled off which suggested that the villagers poured acid on his back, legs and hands. His body was found near a pond in the village.

This was the second brutal incident reported on Wednesday in the district within 24 hours of murder of Niranjan Malik, who was beheaded and his head was found after five days.

A case has been registered in Seragarh police station.

According to reports, the incident took place over family feud. Both the families of Dandasi and his brother Pana were indulged in dispute due to several reasons. Few days ago, Pana fell sick and he did not recover even after treatment. His family suspected that Dandasi was responsible for illness. They plotted to eliminate Dandasi.

Dandasi was attacked by Pana’s three sons while he had gone outside for taking bath in a pond at around 10 am. They poured acid on his body following which he died.
