Bhubaneswar, Jan 7:
A Regional Transport Office (RTO) squad seized two vehicles sporting the same registration number (OD-02-J-7111) parked near Swosti Hotel at Master Canteen square here on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, the interceptor vehicle of the RTO seized the two vehicles, one a Tata Indigo car and the other a Tata Indica car, sporting same number this afternoon.
After verification, RTO officials found out that while the Tata Indigo has a valid registration number, the Tata Indica was using the same number illegally.
The officials said the two cars were hired on rent by Yatra Tours and Travels owned by Suvendu Mohanty of Unit-3 area here.
“After getting the information from a reliable source, we raided a private transport agency called Yatra Tour and Travels near Swosti Hotel and found two vehicles, a Tata Indigo and a Tata Indica car with the same registration number,” said Bhubaneswar RTO Lalmohan Sethi.
Investigation is on to ascertain the purpose of using same numbers, said Sethi, adding, “If we find any illegality done by the travel agency, then it will be fined Rs 5,000 as per the MV Act 1992.”
“Our investigation revealed that the Tata Indica, a new vehicle, was not yet registered. This violation would entail a fine of Rs 5,000. If it is found that the vehicle owner used athe fake number knowingly, the fine amount would go up as per law,” Sethi told OST.
Blaming the driver for the mistake, the Manager of Yatra Tour and Travel Suvendu Mohanty said it was an inadvertent error. He said the driver had been asked to get a number plate (OD-02-K-7111) for the Indica car but instead of ‘K’, he had mistakenly got ‘J’ written on the number plate.
Notably, three persons were killed and 20 injured by a speeding sand-laden Hiawa truck sporting a fake number plate at Khandagiri traffic square on December 1 last year.
