Bhubaneswar, Oct 7:
Two persons were arrested in the Odisha capital by the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police for possessing illegal firearm, police sources said this evening.
The accused were identified as Swayam Prakash Lenka (28) and Bhabani Shankar Mohanty (27), both of them presently staying in the city.
The QAT seized a firearm, live ammunition, a bike, Rs 1100 in cash and two mobiles from the possession of the accused, police sources said.
The QAT, which has started ‘Operation Black Smoke’ to bust firearm trade and criminal gangs in the city, arrested the duo after getting a tip-off about their suspicious movements in the Capital police station area.
The team found the accused near the Durga Puja Mandap of Unit-6 area in the city.
A case (number 333/14) has been registered by the Capital police and investigation is in progress. Police have slapped charges under sections 294, 506, 34 IPC and 25 Arms Act against the accused.
So far, the QAT team has apprehended three gang members in the city and seized fire arms from them under the direct supervision of city Commissioner Dr RP Sharma.
