Kendrapara, Feb 9:

At least 20 fishermen were arrested and their trawlers seized for unlawful fishing in prohibited area of Odisha’s Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in Kendrapara district to protect mass nesting of turtles.

The fishermen hailing from Kharinasi village were forwarded to jail under provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982, a forest official said.

Meanwhile, turtle protection sea patrolling has been intensified and prohibitory orders have been clamped in view of the annual mass nesting season of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles.

Sea patrolling vigil has been stepped close to Gahirmatha coast. Three forest patrolling vessels have been stationed along the Gahirmatha nesting zone to stop trawler intrusion, officials added.

Notably, the state government had, on November 1 last year, imposed a ban on trawling activities along 20KM stretch of the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in Kendrapara district in view of the ensuing mass nesting of the Olive Ridley turtles listed under schedule-1 of the endangered species list.
