The Additional District Judicial Magistrate (ADJM) Court, Khordha, today allowed the Commissionerate Police to take Sneha Swakhyar Samal, the sole accused in the sensational triple murder case at Khandagiri Vihar in the Odisha capital on October 14, on a two-day remand.

The Commissionerate Police had sought a five-day remand for Samal from the court.

Twin city Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr RP Sharma had on Monday told reporters that it would move the local court here on Tuesday to allow them to take accused Samal on a five-day remand so that the police can extract more information from him regarding the motive and reason behind the murder.

Samal had killed orthopaedic surgeon Dr Atulya Kumar Meher, the caretaker at his residence Prashanta Behera and his son early on October 14 morning.

The entire chilling sequence of events resulting in the triple murder had been captured vividly on CCTV cameras installed at Dr Meher’s home, leaving no doubt whatsoever that Samal had killed all three,

The accused himself was also  injured in the scuffle preceding the gory killings and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

Commissionerate police sources have said they propose to revisit the crime spot with Samal during the latter’s remand to recreate the entire sequence of events on that eventful morning and to verify certain facts they have gathered after questioning Dr Meher’s wife and mother and Runu Behera, the caretaker’s wife who was also injured in the attack.

The investigating team of the Commissionerate Police has already quizzed deceased doctor Atulya Chandra Meher’s wife, mother and maid servant Runu Behera and got some valuable leads, which they propose to confront Samal with during their interrogation and the new information might give a new direction to the case, the CP had said.

The CP further said the investigation into the case so far has revealed that Samal had come with a well chalked out plan to kill Dr Meher. When the maid servant Runu, her husband Prasanta Behera and son Minu obstructed him, he attacked them as well, killing the father and son while critically injuring Runu.

During his remand period, Samal would be taken to the crime spot to verify details and interrogate him about his plan of action and the course of crime planned by him, sources in the commissionerate police said.

The police would soon interrogate the owner of the shop from which the knives used in the crime had been purchased, the sources added.
