Keonjhar: A female elephant died after reportedly being hit by a freight train near Ramachandrapur under Sadar Forest Range of Odisha’s Keonjhar district last night.
According to reports, the incident took place while a herd of elephants was crossing the railway track. A goods train coming from Joda collided with one of the pachyderms killing the animal on the spot.
Other elephants had a narrow escape from the accident. On being informed, Forest officials rushed to the spot and detained the train driver for questioning. Probe into the matter is underway.
“The mishap occurred around 9.40 PM when around 9 elephants were crossing the railway track. The train hit a female elephant and dragged the animal for about 60-70 metres. The age of the jumbo is estimated to be 7-8 years,” a Forest official said.
On the other hand, the Forest department has registered a case against the train driver.
