Bramhapur, Dec 15:

Police are looking for two engineers who were abducted by some unidentified persons of Elogola village in Hukuma Panchayat under Patrapur block in Ganjam district on Saturday afternoon.

Sources said, some people of the village kidnapped the two engineers in protest against the inordinate delay in the construction of a hillside road connecting Patrapur with their village.

Following information, senior police and irrigation officials have camped at Khariaguda police station to rescue the two kidnapped engineers.

According to reports, the kidnappers who had taken five persons including the two engineers— SDO Bedambara Behera and junior engineer Haladhar Pradhan of Baghalati irrigation project— hostage, had later released three of them at 3 pm.

While establishing contact with the two engineers has not been possible, police was yet to reach the remote village, Elagola.

Police said five persons including the two engineers had gone to Elogola village in the morning after crossing the river in a boat but did not return from there.

It may be mentioned that though the sub-collector and the local tehsildar in a meeting earlier had assured the villagers for early construction of road to their village, the contractor, who was assigned with the job, left the place. Besides, the construction got further delayed due to Cyclone Phailin in October this year.

The construction of the 6-km hillside road from Patrapur to Elagol village was approved by the Irrigation department with a sanctioned amount of Rs 2.61 crore in 2011.

However, after some days of the construction work, the contractor had left the area.

The villagers had requested the concerned authorities several times to expedite the construction work, but in vain.

On Saturday morning, the two engineers along with two amins and a land acquisition officer had gone to Baniabasa village for assessment of compensation to the displaced villagers of the Baghalati irrigation project.

While they were returning, some unknown people kidnapped all five of them. However, the kidnappers released three people at 3 pm.
