Three odisha cops, including a lady cop, were today placed under suspension for alleged custodial death at Baripada Town police station in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
Acting on the allegations, Mayurbhanj SP Anoop Krishna today suspended two Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) and one lady constable over the alleged custodial death this morning.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Chandan Das of Kalisahi village, and his borther Ranjan were detained in the police station yesterday on theft charges. While Ranjan was allowed to go, Chandan was detained.
However, the accused was found hanging from the exhaust fan in the hazat latrine of the police station this morning.
The family members allged that Chandan was tortured in the custody following which he succumbed to police excess. The police personnel hanged him in the latrine with a bedsheet to make it appear as a suicide.
Later in the day, the body was sent to district headquarters hospital for post mortem to ascertain the cause of the death.
Meanwhile, a compensation of Rs one lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) was announced for the family members of the deceased.
