Three devotees fall ill in Odisha’s pilgrim town Puri

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Puri, Nov 3:

Three devotees fell sick this afternoon after standing in a barricaded queue for a long time to have darshan of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra at the Shree Jagannath temple in Odisha’s pilgrim town of Puri. The three have been admitted to the district headquarters here and are undergoing treatment, reports said.

Thousands of devotees congregated at this pilgrim town on the last Monday of the sacred Kartik month of the Hindu calendar today which also marks the first day of the ‘panchaka’  – the last five days of the holy Kartik month considered as the holiest and said to earn devotees maximum ‘punya’.

In a related incident, a woman hailing from Sheragada in Ganjam district, who was on a visit to Puri, suddenly fell ill near the Dakshina Kali temple here and died on the way to the district headquarters hospital, reports said.

ADMO, Puri Dr Pravat Sahoo said that the woman had a history of illness and was staying at her brother’s place. After she felt uneasy, her brother was taking her to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw but she had died on the way to the hospital.

Since her death was due to her previous illness, no post-mortem was conducted and her body was handed over to her brother after obtaining an undertaking from him, he added.
