Phulbani, Mar 1:
Tension prevailed in Odisha’s communally sensitive Kandhamal district following alleged demolition of an under-construction prayer house by a group of people, police said Friday.
A group of people from Pradhanpada village under Khajuripada police limits allegedly damaged an under construction prayer house on Thursday night.
Kandhamal SP K.B. Singh said police have arrested the prime accused while forces have been deployed to thwart any untoward incident. He said leaders of both communities have agreed to settle the matter amicably.
Singh said the police believed in zero tolerance policy towards such communally inspired disputes.
The district administration has appealed to the people not to get carried away by acts of mischief mongers.
The accused persons had threatened 15 persons of eight families involved in the construction work of the prayer house, community leaders said in their complaint to the police.
The SP said the 15 persons met him on Friday morning and apprised him of the situation.
Preliminary investigation by the district administration suggests that the prayer house was being built on disputed land, sources said.
The SP said the police was verifying the allegation made by the villagers.
