Koraput, Sep 24:
Jeswant Gembali, a native of Jeypore town in Odisha’s Koraput district, has won the prestigious ‘OLX Ideathon -2015’ award, constituted under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission.
The 16-year old AIPMT aspirant won the award under ‘green award’ category for his innovative and eco-friendly idea on converting vegetable waste into manure.
“It was an amazing moment for me when my favourite sports star Sania Mirza appreciated my clean India Idea. She said that the idea can be a game changer,” said an elated Jeswant after receiving the award (an Amazon Kindle tablet) from Sania Mirza at a function organized in Gurgaon on September 17.
The jury comprised of noted film maker Sudhir Mishra, environment expert Sunita Narain, OLX CEO Ervinpreet Singh Anand and tennis star Sania Mirza.
“I floated the idea of recycling vegetable waste into eco-friendly manure. The idea struck me while I was moving in a vegetable market in Mahaveer Nagar area in Kota,” said Jeswant who is preparing for the examination in the city.
“Vegetable vendors can collect the waste from the market at the end of the sales, and convert them into manure which can then be sold, thus providing them extra income,” he added.
About 30, 000 students from class VIII to XII from across the country had sent their entries to the ‘My Country My Idea Campaign’ with 550 ideas presented online by the students in Swatch Bharat website.
It may be noted that Lalita Prasida Sripada Srisai, another girl from the same district, had won the ‘Community Impact Award’ in the finals of Google Science Fair held in California yesterday.
