In yet another case of killing of suspected practitioners of sorcery, a couple was allegedly killed by villagers in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, police said on Friday.
One Rajendra Dehury (55) of Saharpur was repeatedly stabbed after being dragged out of his house by around 15 persons of the same village on Thursday night. The villagers suspected him to be practicing black magic leading to the ailment of a fellow villager, police said.
Police said Jema Dei (50), the wife of Rajendra was meted out the same treatment when she protested the attack on her husband. Later, the assailants beheaded the duo with sharp weapons to vent out their anger in front of their three children, it added.
The couple’s son and two daughters were witness to the gory incident. Based on the statement of their elder daughter the police have registered a case against the accused persons.
As all male members have fled the village apprehending police action, the village wore a deserted look.
A manhunt has been launched to arrest the culprits and investigations are on, police said.
