Angul, Mar 1:

In another instance of practice of superstition in Odisha, a three-month-old baby girl was branded with a hot iron rod by parents to cure stomach ailment in Angul district of Odisha.

The baby was admitted to Pallahada Sub-divisional Hospital after her condition deteriorated.

According to reports, the baby was suffering from stomach related ailments including swelling of stomach. Taking the suggestions of neighbourers into account, the parents Buduni and Ajay Munda of Muktapur village under Pallahada block in Angul district branded their baby with iron rod.

The practice of branding infants with hot iron rod in name of curing ailments is rampant in remote and tribal districts of Odisha. Several infants have become the victims of such kind of blind belief.

Earlier, a two-month-old baby of Bharasundi village under Raighar block had died at Nabarangpur headquarters hospital on January 20 after he was branded with iron road.

Last year, an eight-month-old baby of Tota Sahi under Barakhama block in Kandhamal district was the victim of the superstition on December 22.
