Sulia Yatra : Tribals to defy ban on animal sacrifice

OST Bureau
Balangir, Jan 5:

The tribal leaders on Saturday asked the district administration to desist from taking any measures to stop animal sacrifice during Sulia yatra scheduled on January 7.SULIA YATRA

Attending a meeting presided over by district collector M Muthukumar in the presence of Superintendent of Police Ravi Prakash, all panchayat members and the media, the tribal leaders including Satya Bhoi, Maya Pradhani and Biranchi Kuanra stuck to their decision to carry on with the ritual sacrifice of the animals.

However, the Sulia Sanskar Manch, a tribal outfit opposing animal sacrifice, did not attend the meeting.

To propitiate the presiding deity, the devotees throng the Khairguda village of Kultapada panchayat under Tusura police limits of Balangir district on the second Tuesday of Pousa month every year with hen and goats for sacrifice.

Despite the opposition by several NGOs and animal welfare organizations and the ban order of the Odisha High Court, the tribals have been performing mass animal sacrifice at the yatra.
