Cuttack, Apr 1:
Accusing the college authorities of attempting to hush up a case of alleged sexual harassment, students of a government-run diploma engineering college today went on a rampage in Odisha’s Cuttack city.
The students alleged that Durga Kumar Sinha, an instructor, sexually abused a girl student inside the workshop of Bhubananda Orissa School of Engineering (BOSE) during a practical class two days ago.
Following the incident, the victim first reported the incident to the Principal of the college and then filed a complaint with the Mangalabag police station in the city.
“The Instructor of our workshop tried to harass me sexually on that day. I have stopped him many a times. He told me not to disclose the incident to anybody outside. I want the Principal and the Instructor to be removed from the college as the former tried to hush-up the matter,” the complainant said.
When the college authorities allegedly did not initiate any action against the accused even two days after the incident, the infuriated students vandalised the workshop and other areas in the college today.
“I was not aware of the incident. I received the complaint at around 11 am today. I have recommended the suspension of the staff pending an inquiry,” Principal, Pradipta Kumar Mohanty said.
When tension ran high inside the campus, Commissionerate police reached the college and pacified the agitating students.
