Cuttack, Jul 7:
Six lawyers got stuck in a lift in the new building of Odisha High Court for more than 25 minutes yesterday after it suddenly stopped working. The door of the lift had to be broken using iron rods to bring the lawyers out.
The incident happened at about 12:15 yesterday when seven lawyers, six male and a female, were coming down from the seventh floor of the building that was inaugurated in 2012. The lift got stuck between seventh and sixth floor initially.
While the lift operators attempted to bring it down manually after getting an emergency call from the lawyers inside the lift, they were not able to control the movement of the lift completely as it slipped below the ground floor and the doors got stuck.
They were eventually rescued after other lawyers reached the spot and broke open the doors using iron rods. Stuck for over 25 minutes without light or air, the lawyers were found to be dizzy after being rescued.
To protest over the issue, the lawyers did not join work in the second half. An emergency meeting of the Bar Association was called where many suggested installations of escalators to avoid frequent lift related incidents.
A final decision, however, will be taken in a meeting scheduled to be held today.
