Cuttack, Feb 16:
The Odisha government is unlikely to meet its excise revenue target of Rs 1900 crore for the 2013-14 fiscal.
A high level review meeting presided over by Excise minister Niranjan Pujari here on Saturday has revealed that the excise revenue collected by December 2013 has been around Rs 1,200 crore which is Rs 700 crore less than the target.
The revenue shortfall was due to a slowdown in major sectors, consciousness among the people over the ill effects of liquor consumption and fall in spending capacity of the people, participants in the meeting pointed out.
The meeting was informed that during the current fiscal, the Excise officials have arrested 195 persons against whom 193 cases have been registered under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Apart from this, 9,063 persons were also arrested during raids at several places of the state in this period.
The Excise sleuths have also seized 9,335 kgs of ganja and over 1.7 kg of brown sugar during 2013.
