The Speaker of Odisha Assembly today directed the state government to make a statement in the House on the alleged starvation death in Bolangir district within 24 hours.
Niranjan Pujari issued the ruling following ruckus by opposition members demanding a ruling from the Speaker in the House on the issue.
Alleging that an old woman has died of starvation in Bolangir district on December 8, Leader of the Opposition Narasingha Mishra during the Zero Hour demanded a statement from the Revenue and Disaster Mitigation Minister in the House.
Mishra questioned why post-mortem was not conducted on her body despite there being an allegation of death due to starvation. He further asked why it was not enquired into whether she was a beneficiary of any social welfare scheme.
Following this, Congress members shouted slogans and rushed into the well of the House demanding a ruling from the Speaker on the matter.
As noisy scenes continued in the Assembly, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12.10 PM.
Soon after the House reassembled, Congress members remained adamant on their demand for a ruling.
BJP member from Patnagarh and state unit president K V Singhdeo also raised similar questions.
BJP members joined the Congress and demanded a statement from the Revenue Minister Bijayshree Routray.
Finally, Speaker Niranjan Pujari issued a ruling to the government to give a statement in the House on the alleged starvation death case within 24 hours.
