Rayagada, Nov 6:

The sniffer dog, which had sustained injuries in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Odisha’s Rayagada district on Thursday, will be shifted to Chennai for treatment.

The Belgian Shepherd was injured in the explosion at Hatamunigida in the district while detecting the explosive planted along the road to inflict maximum casualties on the security forces during the day-long bandh called by CPI (Maoist) to protest the Malkangiri encounter in which as many as 30 rebels were killed.

“The sniffer dog injured in the landmine blast will be taken to Chennai for treatment as he has sustained injuries on his head and eye,” CRPF Commandant of 4th Battalion Manoj Kumar Sharma said.

It may be recalled that explosive went off while Axel was approaching near the landmine. The dog sustained injuries in the left eye and head. He was rushed to district veterinary hospital for treatment.

Axel has been working with CRPF 4th battalion at Rayagada since last four years.

The seven-year-old trained dog averted a major mishap as security personnel were to use the Rayagada-Muniguda for combing.
