Over a hundred slum dwellers including women today ransacked an illegally run liquor shop in Baigana basti in Kathajodi Vihar locality of Odisha’s Cuttack city.
The illegal liquor vend which used to run from a shanty for over two years was completely pulled down by the women of the slum.
Men too joined the women in demolition of the liquor shop which had several cases of liquor stored in it.
“We don’t want the liquor shop here. We want it to be closed. The liquor trader should be punished since he has attacked our men and women,” said a woman resident of the basti.
The liquor shop owner had a scuffle with some local youths yesterday evening in which some had sustained injuries. Irked over the incident the slum dwellers sat on a dharna in front of the Markat Nagar police station today.
After being dejected over police inaction over the incident, slum dwellers pulled down the liquor shop.
The local corporator Giribala Behera has warned of intensifying the agitation if the liquor shop is not shifted from the area.
“Yesterday evening the liquor trader had unleashed terror in the area. I had accompanied about 200 people to the police station. We have lodged an FIR. The accused should be punished immediately,” said Behera.
