In a shocking incident, at teacher of Hariabanka primary school under Kharinasi Panchayat in Kendrapara district of Odisha locked away a sleeping class two student in the classroom on Saturday.
Seven-year-old Reeta, daughter of Pradip Jana of the village, was later rescued by villagers after she woke up, found herself locked and started crying loudly.
The villagers first tried to contact the headmaster Jogendra Soren for the keys to open the room. But when they failed to reach him, they broke open the window of the room and brough Reeta out. She remained locked up for over four hours.
Even though there are 147 students and five teachers in the school, no one noticed the kid sleeping in the classroom before she was locked down around noon when the school hours closed on Saturday.
The guardians of the students have reacted sharply to the negligence of the teachers.
The mobile phone of the headmaster has remained switched off since the incident.
District education officer (DEO) Sangram Sahu said he had ordered an inquiry into the incident and promised action against anyone found guilty.
