Malkangiri, Dec 2:
Six suspected Maoists were arrested today on the first day of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) week observed by the Red rebels in Odisha’s Malkangiri district in the district.
The rebels were arrested during a joint combing operation by BSF, CRPF, SOG and DVF personnel in the Rajalkonda forested area, said Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra briefing newsmen here today.
He said the rebels were active in Kalimela area and were members of the Malkangiri division of the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee of the outlawed CPI (Maoist). They were moving inside the forest when they were spotted by the security personnel who overpowered them, he added.
The arrested have been identified as Deba Kabasi (30), Jaga Kabasi (25), Sukra Kabasi (25), Rama Madkami (25), Soma Podiami (23) and Gobinda Khemudu (22), Mohapatra said.
Police said the arrested were involved in several cases of Maoist violence which included offences of loot, blasts and killings.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened to prevent any untoward incident and ensure normalcy in Malkangiri and nearby areas during PLGA Week, the SP said.
BSF, CRPF, SOG and DVF have intensified combing operations and patrolling in the area, police said.
