Malkangiri, Sept 17:
One Maoist was killed during an encounter inside Pujariguda forests under Badadural panchayat in Odisha’s Malkangiri district this afternoon, police said. The body of the deceased ultra was found at the encounter site later.
According to reports, the district police and the District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel, led by the district SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra, had gone on a combing operation into Pujariguda forest when the armed Maoists opened fire at them.
Security personnel immediately retaliated. The cross-fire lasted nearly an hour.
Although the local police claimed to have killed six Maoists, this has not been substantiated as only one body has been recovered from the site.
The DGP Sanjeev Marik has confirmed the death of only one Maoist in the encounter. He said a carbine and an ordinary 303 rifle have been seized from the spot.
