Brahmapur, Feb 24:
The District and Sessions court in Odisha’s Ganjam district today sentenced six persons to life imprisonment in a twin murder case in the district in 2008.
The six were convicted by District and Sessions Judge Madhusudan Dhal after he found them guilty of murder of Gangadhara Sahu and Jayaram Sahu on November 9, 2008. Five of those convicted are relatives of the victims.
However, three were acquitted by the court for lack of evidence against them.
The murders in Kusumi village under Golanthara police station took place due to rivalry over liquor trade, the prosecution said.
Deceased Gangadhara and Jayaram were attacked by those convicted while the duo was going astride their motorcycle for opening their liquor shop.
Bairi Patra, one of the convicts, was engaged in illegal liquor business and was opposed to opening of the licensed shop at the village.
Patra, the hooch seller, was nabbed from Hyderabad three months after the twin murder.
The other convicts are Jaggi Patra, Rameya Patra, Lakheya Patra, Sanyasi Patra and K Appa Rao.
