Colombo, Jan 9:

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya Friday afternoon officially declared Maithripala Sirisena the new president of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankas opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena speaks to media at the temple of top Buddhist monk Maduluwawe Sobitha in Colombo on November 23, 2014. Agriculture Minister Sirisena, who defected November 21 to challenge his former boss President Mahinda Rajapakse in the January 8 election, visited monk Sobitha to receive his crucial blessings in the Buddhist-majority nation of 20 million people.
