Kendrapara, Nov 27:
A 65-year-old woman suffering from cancer committed suicide along with her 71-year-old husband in Charigaon village under Nikirai police station in Odisha’s Kendrapara district yesterday night.
As luck would have it, the impoverished couple signed the suicide pact as they could not cope with the exorbitant cost of cancer treatment.
The bodies of the deceased persons – Sanatan Das (71) and Hara das (65) – were recovered from a field on the backyard of their house. The couple had ended their life by consuming deadly pesticides.
They had locked up their house and ended their life outside their house, said NIkirai police station Inspector, Kiran Kumar Hembrum.
The couple was poverty-ridden. Their only son is doing a private job in Calcutta. The couple was dependent on the money sent by their son to make a living.
After Hara was diagnosed with cancer, their plight had become worse, police said adding that an unnatural death case had been registered in this connection.
