In a shocking incident, 72 girl students were asked to do 200 sit-ups as punishment by a lady teacher of Gudungarmal Ashram school under Gudvela block of Bolangir district in Odisha on Wednesday.
Two of the students, who were aksed to do an additonal 100 sit-ups as punishment for alleged theft in the hostel by the lady teacher Mita Bhoi, were taken ill due to the excessive strain.
While the school authorities did not bother to provide medical attention the sick students, the leader of the village women’s organistaion admitted them to the Gudvela hospital with high fever, swollen legs and excruciating pain in chest and back.
A case has been registered against the lady teacher at the Gudvela police station whil villagers have demanded strong action against her.
The teacher, however, remains unrepentant. “I asked them to do 10-12 sit-ups because they refused to pay heed to my repeated warnings about frequent thefts in the hostel,” Bhoi said.
When asked about the incident, headmaster of the school Om Prakash Dharua said he was at a staff meeting in Bolangir when the incident took place.
“As soon as I came to know about the incident, I informed the District Welfare Officer (DWO) about it”, he added.
