Jagatsinghpur: In a shocking incident, an elderly couple and their married daughter were set on fire in their house by their son-in-law in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district.

All the four persons were died as the flames engulfed the entire house which was locked from inside.

The incident took place at Banapata village in Jagatsinghpur district on Sunday night.

According to police, Harekrushna Mallik (35) had poured petrol on his father-in-law Nabaghana Sahoo (61), mother-in-law Kamala (55) and wife Rubina (26) and set them on fire in their house following a heated argument over family issues.

The police said the the elderly couple and their son-in-law were died on the spot. Rubina, who was taken to the Community Health Centre in Kujang, also succumbed to her injuries while she was being shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Rubina, while undergoing treatment at Kujang CHC, said her husband had tortured her and carried out the crime.

The trouble started as the elderly couple was opposing their daughter’s marriage to Harekrushna, a Dalit from Balititiri village under Tihidi block of Bhadrak district. Harekrushna used to beat Rubina and forcing her to return to her parents’ house.

Harekrushna had come to his in-laws home on Friday to take back his wife with him but she refused to go with him. “Angered over this, he (Harekrushna) picked up an argument with them and committed the crime,” the police said quoting a villager.

The police have seized the bodies and sent them to Kujang hospital for autopsy. “We have launched an investigation into the incident,” said Tirtol SDPO S K Mallik.
