A meeting between Shia cleric Kalb-e-Jawwad and the chief minister took place late Wednesday in which the issue was discussed.

Sources said the Shia community is divided over the appointments, alleging that Azam Khan was bribed for them.

“The people being appointed to the board are corrupt and would lead to large scale malpractises,” Kalb-e-Jawwad told IANS.

He sought an immediate and convincing response from the state government on the matter and said he has given a five-point charter of demands to the chief minister. One of its demands is to take the Waqf department out of Khan’s control.

He also said he has been assured that “no injustice” will be done.

Violence had erupted in the city when a Shia protest march proceeding towards the minister’s house was intercepted by police. In the clashes later, one person was killed and many were injured, leading to tensions on the day of Alvida Namaaz – the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

  1. Controversies

During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Azam Khan caused a controversy which has sparked attention by the media. First, Azam Khan made a controversial statement: “The peaks of Kargil were conquered not by Hindu, but Muslim soldiers.” This was criticized by the Indian media and an FIR was lodged against Azam Khan. Azam Khan also refused to apologize for this and later blamed the Indian Election Commission for being partial with respect to him. Second, while addressing a rally in Sambhal, Azam Khan appealed to people to take revenge against the “murderers of Muzaffarnagar.” Third, Azam Khan launched insults against his political opponent Narendra Modi, saying, ““We don’t want your sympathy, elder brother of a dog’s son.”

Finally, on 11 April 2014, Azam said that Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had been punished by Allah for “forcible” sterilisation during the Emergency and “shilanyas” at the disputed site in Ayodhya. He also commented on Narendra Modi’s acknowledgement of his marriage, saying “the person who could not live with his wife, how can he live with the country?”.
