Sexual harassment row: Odisha varsity dismisses teacher

A varsity in Odisha today dismissed a teacher on charges of causing sexual and mental harassment to some girl students.

Vice Chancellor of Sambalpur University (SU) Chittaranjan Tripathy today dismissed Manoj Kumar Behera, a teacher of department of Performing Arts for sexually and mentally harassing some girl students of the same department.

Tripathy took the decision after the university’s sexual harassment cell decided in favour of dismissal of the accused teacher.

Earlier in the day, four students of the department of Performing Arts had sat on a dharna in front of the administrative office of the varsity demanding stringent action against the accused teacher.

Office bearers of some socio-cultural organizations of Sambalpur had come in support of the students and had joined them in the dharna.

Notably, the students had alleged that Behera had mentally tortured them and had used double meaning words against them.

The students had also alleged that Behera had made offensive remarks on Sambalpuri music and dance. They had claimed that they had earlier complained to the Vice Chancellor and other authorities of the university in this effect but no action was taken.

However, the vice chancellor on the other hand, had earlier in the said that a meeting of the sexual harassment cell of the varsity will sit for a meeting later in the day to take a call on the matter.
